Does my invoice need to say Tax Invoice
It depends.
If you are registered for GST then yes, your invoices must be labelled and clearly marked as a ‘Tax Invoice’ but if your business is not registered for GST then no, your invoices must be labelled and clearly marked as simply ‘Invoice’.
If your business is turning over more than $75,000 per annum then you are required to register for GST, but otherwise it is optional.
Does a tax invoice need an ABN
If you are running a business in Australia (and you have an ABN) then all of your invoices need to include your ABN. If you are invoicing for activities done as a private recreational pursuit or hobby, and wholly of a private nature then you do not need an ABN to create an invoice.
Is a tax invoice the same as a receipt
You can use an invoice as a receipt or proof of purchase. The main difference betwen a receipt and an invoice is that an invoice is issued before payment whereas a receipt is issued after payment is made.
Do I charge GST if not registered for GST
No, you must not charge GST if your business is not registered for GST.
If I’m not registered for GST, what should my invoice include
Your tax invoice needs to include the same details, regardless of whether or not you are registered for GST. The only difference will be labelling your invoice as simply ‘Invoice’ if you are not registered for GST.
